Autism Dad: Landau-Kleffner Syndrome

Appointment in a couple hours with Dr. Doris Trauner, a highly regarded pediatric neurologist.

She suspects Ben may have Landau-Kleffner Syndrome, which is rare and often misdiagnosed as autism. Previous EEGs have been inconclusive, and she is ordering a new exam for Ben to check for seizure activity.

Following the appointment, the boys will be with me for the rest of the night. Can’t wait for that! Happy Friday everyone!

  1. This is very interesting. My brain is going in a lot of different directions with this one, and I’m afraid to say or ask something really stupid. I will venture out on the limb far enough to ask How are you feeling about LKS as a potential diagnosis? And can a positive LKS rule out autism, or could they be co-existing in a child? I really don’t know enough about either to intuit the answers. In any case, I hope you and the boys continue to be well. 🙂 -Jen

Hey Jen! You are asking all the right questions, but I don’t necessarily have answers. Dr. Trauner did mention that, were Ben to be diagnosed with LKS, that there is a new IV treatment that has been shown to be helpful with some LKS kids. Other than that, I am in the dark. Take good care!

Just goes to show you how hard it is to figure out what we do and don’t know. Hope she is able to provide you with an answer one way or another. Please let me know what the outcome is. Enjoy the boys. – Sam

Appointment went well. She is concerned that Ben has not improved — and may have regressed — since 2008. Ordering EEG, MRI, and blood tests. Wait listed for the EEG. Thanks for reading and commenting.

I have heard of this before and read some articles on it ,[some young girl from the McCoys of Hatfield and McCoy fame ] I am sure I kept the article, but some where in a box . But this is good the Dr. has some good tools to help you and keep us posted. So much to learn in our children’s lives. Keep on enjoying the time with them!!

Happy Thanksgiving as well!! sincerely, carla

    Hello A-Dad!
My daughter is in a very similar situation with Dr. Trauner… My daughter was diagnosed autistic by the school district, but Dr. Trauner thinks it may be LKS instead. We are going to try Pregnisone tonight for 4-6 weeks and hope for the best, as all the testing we have done so far result in the “gray area.” Good luck to you!
